Sticking it to the man

Coupons.
I do them. I buy them, print them, clip them, and go to multiple stores to use them.
I am NOT one of those damn crazies that has 300 bottles of suave shampoo.
I do however have 5 deodorants. But I will use them! PROMISE.
So here is what I did today:
Got out of work early. What can I accomplish with two to three hours pre baby-pick up?
Stick it to the MAN.
And by the ‘man’, I mean the ridiculously high prices I have to pay for shit sans chemicals, and known carcinogens. Yes. That lotion you just slathered on? Has chemicals BANNED in Europe, because they are known to switch on oncogenes in your body. We will talk about this another day.
Anywhoo- I needed some more razors. Those are so pricy. Makes me sick. So I bought… Yes BOUGHT two coupons ($.08/coupon) from my favorite website.

the coupon clippers

I also happened to have a $5/$30 and $4/$20 coupon for CVS. This combined with coupon for Huggies, Burt’s Bees, crest mouthwash, and a few other items. I printed out my CVS coupons in store with their little coupon printer/kiosk. Love that thing! Took my first razors coup and got some razors. Then I got some Burt’s bees face wipes (post-burpees!), some Huggies, and some mouth wash. I needed to get up to $30 to use my $5 coupon. That wasn’t hard. The damn razors were $19.99! The mouthwash was a bonus find and was on sale + $2 EB for buying. Sahweet!
So I saved $12 on the first haul.
Second haul I got one more razor refill and some gum. The gum was $2 off with a coupon, I saved $4 off the first $20 and then an extra $4 off the razors. Not to mention my $2 EB From the previous purchase. Total savings today- $27. I didn’t include every item or coupon, because frankly I have had a glass of wine and my ass is on the couch… Nowhere near my receipts.
Moral of this post: don’t pay full price for stuff. Ever.
Click on the link and get some COUPS!
I save $15-20, $30 or more per trip with coupons. And for my vegan peeps, they have SO delicious coupons right now!!! $1 per item! I bought 25 lol…. They don’t expire until May! BOOHYAH!
Their yogurt? AHmazing!!!!

Also, check out “Mambo Sprouts” <— coupons for healthy veg/organic items.
Again, I don’t have the address in front of me, but if you can’t use Google, I don’t know what to tell you. :p

Eat clean, live long, and save green.
(Is this my new tagline? You like?)

Tomorrow I am making vegan blueberry pancakes. Be ready.

the truth about ‘reduced’ produce!

So I was perusing my local Stop&Shop today and I passed by the “reduced produce section.” There were about 5 little old men and women there gawking and squawking about the veggies. So obviously babe and I had to investigate the hullabaloo! Turns out, I’ve been MISSING out on major $ savings! If you know me you know I love to save $, but live clean. I actually saved $18 today just buying on-sale items and combining those sales with coupons.

back to the reduced produce….

So I picked up some peppers, and cucumbers. I was BLOWN AWAY at how cheap they were! The dates-to-sell-by on the package too weren’t so far off from today’s date. I checked them over carefully and decided it would be stupid not to buy them. I knew I’d be cooking with them, or at least preparing them for something tonight.

so normally, I’d buy what’s on sale and, make something with that. Yes, I usually buy fresher items, or ones without marks, gashes, spots, or weird shapes. This is honestly because as Americans we have been tricked into believing that any sort of fruit or veggie with brown spots, or a weird look to it is completely tarnished and bad. WRONG! These friends are just in a different stage in their lifespan. Fresher vegetables tend to have a fresher taste, but a day or two shouldn’t really make a huge difference. Also, those gashes or weird shapes are just because… well just because! They’ve suffered trauma from shipping or just grew all funky. Doesn’t make them worth less.

So here is what I got:

ImageImageImage

just LOOK at those prices! In the front of the store, the red bell peppers are $2.99/lbs, this is would have cost $3.18 for that weight, but I got it for $1.05. And they will be so damn good in mah stir fry toniiiiight! The cukes- a little spongy at the ends, so I trimmed them up nice, and sliced them. Three for $1.19? Unheard of this time of year. The green guys are Cubanelle peppers. A light green, sweet peper. To me they look like pepperoncinis (sp?!) but they aren’t spicy at all. They have a sweet, delicious crunch. I got THREE for $0.33?!?! fabuloussssss…..

Combined with the reds, and a white onion, my stir fry is gonna be sahWEET! So here is the prepped, final product:

and here is just a little diddy of my mini-me enjoying her kale/broccoli/edamame lunch 🙂

SO… the moral of this story is…. save yourself some $, and check out your local reduced produce section! Obviously you’d want to scan over the goods really well before purchasing, but you’ll be amazed at how much you can save, and how tasty these little guys really are!!!

🙂 eat clean, live long, and save green!

and it BURNS. So good.

beautiful BURN

HIYA!

That’s my Karate chopping noise. However I do not know Karate.

I do know how to get a GOOD burn on! Let’s talk about ‘burn’. What is that?

That is your muscle(s) telling you it’s time to STOP! haha….

“work through it they say….. it will be fun they say….”

This is how muscles grow, and become stronger. Lactic acid is building up, the muscle is actually tearing a bit, and eventually you need a break. Lifting weights, and doing toning/bodyweight exercises gets a good burn. If you want to get a good burn, click on the hyperlink above, and do the vid! (Cassey Ho is my secret love/crush, and she’s my hero. Follow her, and get legs like hers! YOWSA!)

Combining cardio and toning is the best way to banish fat to the depths of hell, meanwhile improving your overall cardiovascular health. woot!

Remember, after a workout you HAVE to eat. Don’t be all “but I’m gonna binge! I’ve had to many calories already today! I’m on a diet…. wah wah wah I have to be skinny! OMG….”

If I hear you say that, I’ll smack the dumb out of you. The scale is actually a horrible indicator of fitness and overall health. Muscle weighs more than fat. SURE, we all need to shed some fatty-fat cells, (my ass, don’t I know it…) however, skinny is not sexy in my book. Thick, bodacious, and sexy curves are. Muscles, strength, endurance, and clean, cut definition is. DO NOT starve yourself. Eat clean, make your own foods, read labels, snack on veggies&fruits, cut out refined sugars and chemicals. Stop drinking soda, juice, and those goddamned energy drinks which are total garbage….

OH…. and drink a TON of water! your kidney and guts will thank you.

This is a screen shot taken from my iphone. This is hard to do once, nevermind 3-5 times! BURN!

This evening I totalled in about 40 minutes total of toning/cardio/BURN…. Doing a POP HIITilates video with Cassey Ho, and a few of her other gems, along with 10 mins of Barre leg stuff. I will be sore tomorrow, but super happy about it! woot!

um hi... this blond chick is OBVIOUSLY me!?

Meat, with a side of… change

Meat, with a side of….

This is a great posting to read for those who eat meat but need to rethink their eating patterns. After January 1st of this year, I think I have had meat once or twice. A bite of chicken, a bite of pork, and some sunshine. For those looking for a change but not as drastic as vegetarianism or veganism, making vegetables your main dish and meat a side, or cutting down to meat in one meal per day as opposed to three, this is for you. You might surprise yourself at how much better your body functions when you aren’t treating your body like a graveyard for animal products.

Peace out cub scouts!

Kiss my kale

sexy!
sexy!

Kale. It’s that weird green stuff they garnish your popcorn chicken with at Perkins, right?!

Wrong. (Ok well they do use it for that since its damn cheap to buy!)

It’s fiberlicious, full of vitamin B, C, D, E, K, calcium, iron, beta carotene, etc.

It’s a member of the cabbage family.

It comes in purple. I LOVE PURPLE things.

It’s a cancer fighter. POW!

It has been shown to lower cholesterol , and has bile-binding properties, to lower fat absorption.

Ok. Does it taste good?

At first I was like “BLEGH”.

But then with a heaping dose of chopped garlic, salt, and pepper.

You need to love this. It loves you. It’s usually about $0.99/lbs and you can get about a weeks worth for $2. (You need to eat it at least three times a week. its too good for you!) It doesn’t last long in my house! Tony and the baby eat it up like mad. I join in and the toilets get their workout! 😉

Try this quick and easy recipe and I PROMISE, you will change your mind about it

Gather: As much kale as you can fit into your pot, I usually cook 1 bunch at a time. The come pre-bunched at the store.

Chop the ends of the stems off, and loosely chop depending on how big you like your bites.

Chop chop chop

(*or you could pull the leaves apart. I do this sometimes when I’m in a hurry.*)

Place in a large bowl and soak in cold water. While soaking, prepare the garlic.

MMMMM GARLIC! It’s what makes this dish/side so happenin’…..

pick out 5-6 big fat cloves. Smash with skins on, and they come off very easily. That is unless you prefer to peel them, however you’ll smash them anyways. Smashing brings out the flavah! SMASH!

kale

Smash and chop. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a large pot on med-high heat. When hot, add kale. It’s should still have some water on it even after you’ve drained it, which helps steam it. Add in the kale bunch by bunch until its wilted a bit, 2-3 mins. We are about halfway through, so add your garlic and your salt/pepper. The salt helps cut the bitterness, add more than you think, but dont go cray cray!

Stir, turn off heat, and cover. Let it sit for about 5 mins. It should finish cooking and steaming inside the pot.

Enjoy. Serve hot! Don’t let it sit too long. You want it a nice emerald color. Don’t let those precious leaves turn greyish!

Eat clean, live long, and clog your toilet. Haha!

TTFN.

“You should start a blog”

So, I DID.

I had made some spinach-mango-banana (vegan of course) froyo before a Saturday am workout with my love, and I instagrammed a photo of it. I do this a lot. My friend Dianne suggested I make blog of my foodie adventures. posting photos of my food keeps me motivated and makes for a healthy exchange of recipes, and go-to places for the best ingredients. Having started 2013 on a new and healthier kick, I have been making a LOT of new foods. 99.9% of them vegan.
Why vegan? The better question is why NOT vegan. Veganism is more than just bran, tofu, and tempeh (which I need to use more…) it’s about letting go of what society tells you that you need. After all, a bunch of dairy and meat companies run by rich men telling you what to eat?!

You’re not a baby cow; why on earth would you need to drink cows milk? Beyond that, the industrial dairy farms in this country are a plight on society and the environment. We will explore than on another day. Believe me, I could put down a brick of cheese (with wine) with no problem (besides the subsequent bloating, flatus, and lethargy…), but is that what my heart and thighs really need? Nopers.
Meat provides protein, fats, and vitamins/minerals, and flavor. Yes, yes, and yes. BUT: these things are also found in a plant based diet, minus the cholesterol, triglycerides, blood-guts-abuse, and not to mention antibiotics, chemicals and hormones that our body certainly does NOT, need!
DERP. I went on a tangent.

Ok so I wanted to post the recipe for this yummy, day-starter.
I don’t measure (I should…) so these are estimates. Feel free to add, subtract, divide, and conquer. What?

1 cup washed spinach. Don’t make it too wet.
(I bought whatever was on sale at the grocery store.)
1-2 sliced frozen bananas
1/2-1 mango
Soy milk

Blend the spinach and frozen guys together in a food processor and splash in your soy milk until desired consistency is achieved. I use unsweetened soy milk, because I am angry and the dimples on my ass. Screw you! I will get you, jerks.

Serve ice cold and perhaps topped with coconut shreds. Holy yum!

Until next time. Eat clean, live cruelty free, and get off our ass if you want to shrink it. O_o
